I've gone 3 years in a row now, so I really enjoy the event as a non-competing, late-night dancer. It's big, kinda inconvenient to get to once you realize you're gonna be walking a good bit, especially if you don't book accommodation early, but it is a very pretty walk through the city. There are plenty of food options, even a gas-station for late-night snacks right next to the venue. One of my favorite things is the second floor. It's dark, moody, perfect for late-night dancing. There's a good amount of space, but also a lot of people. It's warm event, but the dancing is so good it's worth it. I love the variety of people you get to dance with, one of the benefits to a larger event. People stay late which is amazing for the breakfast club, but there's never actually breakfast since everything's closed :( Gotta book your lodging a year out.

Freiburg is a lovely city, everything is on walking distance, very nice places to eat/visit/relax at the river (and even swim). Venue is great, mainballroom, another big ballroom and smaller ballroom (that can be added to the big ballroom). Good floor, A/C (they could have turned on the fans at the ceiling a bit earlier in the weekend to have more A/C). Balance follow/leader was good for workshop passes, but for party passes it was a bit off, so in general a more followers then leaders. They will adjust next year, so will see if it is better.

German Open is a great large-scale event in one of the most charming cities in Europe. Getting there might not be equally convenient for everyone, and the event isn’t hotel-based, but the overall experience is absolutely worth it. The organizing team works seamlessly, the pro lineup is outstanding, and the shows — both by the pros and in the finals of the higher divisions — are truly impressive. Yes, it can get quite hot in August, but that’s not really something anyone can control.

German Open 2024 was my first event, and I still enjoy going there! However, I’ve decided to switch to a Party Pass this year, simply because the Novice workshops are overcrowded. We were in the largest ballroom (which is huge), and still I had trouble even seeing the instructors and didn’t have that much space to dance, because it was just too full. The newcomer workshops in 2024 were not overcrowded, and I can imagine that it’s also not a problem for higher workshop levels. The socials and comps were well organized though, and the staff/MC is awesome!
