I was hesitant about going to GNDC because I’d heard mixed reviews and I now understand why. It’s now turned out to be my favorite event so far and I’ve been to small regional events throughout the eastern US up to event the size of of MADjam. Why I’ve heard people not love GNDC: • In addition ti WCS, there’s also Shag. I found this to be a non-issue as the shag dancing was held in a separate ballroom. Plus I loved getting to watch WCS champs dance with Shag champs. What a fun treat!!! • Not a lot of workshops. This is true. For me I found this to be an advantage. If I had time and wanted to go to a workshop, there was always one to go to. It was nice not having to pick between 2 or 3 workshops happening at the same time. It also gave me much needed time to rest and not feel like I was missing out. Other things I appreciated: • Genuinely “right sized” competitions. I’m still a novice and those competitions can have so many heats. I think there were only 2 (maybe 3?) heats for the followers. • Great fun routines/cabaret • People really got into the “theme” and the costume contest. This year was Las Vegas themed and it was a riot! • Venue hotel has an Indoor pool, hot tub, and saunas to soothe sore muscles • “Courtyard” style lobby so you could peek out of your hotel room down into the lobby to see if your friends were there. No need to walk down a long hallway and go down an elevator to scope out the activity • Walking distance from a huge shopping mall and plenty of food options nearby Other things to note: • Rooms have refrigerators but no microwaves. Each floor has a shared microwave near the elevators • Cannot see the main ballroom streaming in the room on the tv • Additional cost to park your car, but there is a discounted rate for dancers. Valet service does not get a discounted rate • ATL is super easy to get to! Some people who’d never been used one afternoon to go visit places like the Georgia Aquarium and the Coca Cola Museum.
